satellites<\/p><p>The manufacture of solar panels that capture energy from the Sun to supply electrical energy to satellites that revolve around our planet is a technological innovation produced in the city of S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 dos Campos. The merit goes to Orbital Engenharia, a small company that since last year has dominated the complete production cycle of these artifacts. \u201cIn addition to Brazil, only countries such as the United States, France, Germany, Japan, Russia and China have the capacity to manufacture these panels\u201d, says mechanical engineer C\u00e9lio Costa Vaz, director of Orbital. To acquire knowledge and join the select group of space solar panel producers, the company received funding from FAPESP, through the Technological Innovation Program in Small Businesses (PIPE).<\/p><p>Also known as photovoltaic generators, the panels are the most efficient way of generating energy for satellites and stratospheric balloons. They transform the solar radiation found in space into electricity, energy essential for the operation of these space vehicles. The explanation for why only a small number of nations master the production technology of these generators lies in the difficulty of assembling their basic unit, a part called a\u00a0Solar Cell Assembly\u00a0(SCA), or assembled solar cell, in a free translation. \u201cIf we compare a panel to a battery box, each cell would be a battery\u201d, says Vaz. It is made up of three components: the solar cell, the interconnector and a protective cover, known as a\u00a0cover glass.<\/p><p>Solar cells can be made from various materials, including silicon and gallium arsenide. They are usually 0.2 millimeters (mm) thick and typically have widths ranging from 2 centimeters (cm) by 4 cm to 4 cm by 7 cm. Interconnectors are tiny pieces of silver, 0.012 millimeters thick, used to make electrical contact between cells. Ocover glass, in turn, is very thin glass (between 0.1 mm and 0.2 mm thick), similar to a microscope slide, equipped with an anti-reflective layer. It is glued onto the solar cell and protects it from radiation in space such as protons and electrons.<\/p><p>Essential tools<br \/>These three components \u2013 solar cell, interconnector and\u00a0cover glass\u00a0\u2013 can be easily purchased, but the problem is assembling the cell. \u201cAt first glance, it may seem like a simple challenge, but it is not. There are several quality requirements that make this assembly very complex. In the past, we tried to develop and qualify it, but we failed\u201d, says engineer C\u00e9lio Vaz, who worked for 18 years at the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), based in S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 dos Campos. The complicating factor is the fact that the tooling needed to produce the SCA is not found on the market, unlike the components. \u201cWe had to develop the equipment, devices and tools to manufacture the\u00a0Solar Cell Assembly. This was only possible with PIPE funding.\u201d<\/p><\/header><div class=\"post-content\"><p>During the first phase of the project, the researcher designed the equipment for producing the cells and the solar panel, defined the manufacturing processes and procedures, outlined the product warranty plan, inspection programs and qualification tests. This work, which began in April 2001, took around six months.<\/p><p>In the second phase, lasting two years, the equipment was effectively produced, the processes were developed and the test specimens were manufactured and tested. \u201cThe results obtained demonstrate that we have technological quality and qualified manufacturing means\u00a0to meet the demand for equipment for the aerospace sector\u201d, says C\u00e9lio Vaz.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-4518cd1\" data-id=\"4518cd1\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d7ce7b0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d7ce7b0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;ekit_we_effect_on&quot;:&quot;none&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>According to the engineer, mastering this technology will bring great benefits to the country, such as import substitution, the generation of local jobs \u2013 Orbital employs four people, two of whom have higher education \u2013 and the possibility of exporting products and services with high added value .<\/p><p><br \/>Two requests<br \/>Orbital&#8217;s final customers are the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB) and Inpe, the research center with which the company signed its first contract, in December 2001. The company participated in a public tender and was chosen to manufacture four solar panels for the Scientific Satellite (Satec), each of them measuring 50 cm by 66 cm. In this project, 1,100 imported cells were used, because until that date Orbital had not yet produced these components. Each cell, made with monocrystalline silicon, measured 20 mm by 40 mm. Satec was scheduled to be placed into orbit by the Rocket Launch Vehicle (VLS), which exploded at the Alc\u00e2ntara rocket launch base, in Maranh\u00e3o, in August last year.<\/p><p>In September 2002, the company was subcontracted to participate in an even more ambitious undertaking: designing and manufacturing solar panels that will be installed in a service module common to a series of satellites called the Multimission Platform (PMM), with the capacity to take, in each flight, variable payloads such as cameras to capture images of the Earth, radars or scientific experiments, for example. It is being built for AEB and Inpe by a consortium of national companies: Atech, from S\u00e3o Paulo, Cenic, Fibraforte and Mectron, from S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 dos Campos.<\/p><p>The platform is equipped with basic equipment (power supply system, propulsion, telecommunications, etc.) that serves to keep the satellite&#8217;s payload in operation, such as terrestrial imaging cameras, radars, sensors and scientific experiments. \u201cThe platform is in the project detailing phase. We will design, develop and assemble solar panels for the two wings of the platform, each measuring approximately 80 cm by 130 cm and with almost 1,500 cells\u201d, explains the director of Orbital. The panels and platform are expected to be ready by the beginning of 2006.<\/p><p>International quality<br \/>As the national satellite market is limited and seasonal, Orbital is targeting customers abroad to grow. \u201cWe intend to enter into international tenders and, to this end, we are in the process of obtaining certification under the NBR 15100 Space Quality System standard, which corresponds to AS 9100A at an international level\u201d, says C\u00e9lio Vaz. According to the engineer, the United States manufactures a few dozen scientific satellites per year and is a great market. \u201cI believe we can be successful there if we have a competitive price.<\/p><p>Furthermore, countries like Mexico, Chile and Argentina have space programs and do not master the technology for manufacturing these panels.\u201d Another alternative to survive in this market is to diversify production. \u201cWe are thinking about using the technology and equipment developed by us to manufacture other products, such as optical sensors and equipment to store and condition the energy captured by the panels\u201d, says C\u00e9lio Vaz.<\/p><p>Space solar panels, however, cannot be used here on Earth, because they differ greatly from similar terrestrial devices. Terrestrial solar panels are designed for the type of light that arrives at the Earth&#8217;s surface, with a different electromagnetic spectrum than that existing outside the atmosphere. Another difference is in the panel encapsulation.
